Having Trouble Talking with Lumineers

I got Lumineers. I like how they look, though they’re a little bulky. That may explain why I’ve been having trouble speaking, but my dentist says they’re fine and I’ll get used to it.  It’s been a few weeks and I haven’t gotten used to it. Can anything be done?

Dalton – Utah

Dalton,

Lumineers are often marketed to inexperienced cosmetic dentists as being easy to place because they don’t require tooth preparation. Unfortunately, they often require more experience than you’d think. Only a fraction of the cases will actually look their best without some tooth preparation. A good cosmetic dentist knows what is the best type of porcelain veneers for your smile along with the any tooth preparation  necessary.

I don’t think your dentist is an expert cosmetic dentist based on what you’ve said. You have a few options. First, you could give it more time and see if your speech patterns adjust, though that won’t do anything about the bulkiness.

Another option is to see an expert cosmetic dentist to see if he or she can do some contouring. I don’t think your dentist is qualified.  Your last option is to have the porcelain veneers re-done. I’d suggest with a different brand and a different dentist.
